Rian Johnson’s latest, Knives Out, is a classic whodunnit murder-mystery featuring one of the better ensemble casts devised for a film.
Renowned crime novelist Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer) turns up dead at his wealthy estate right after his 85th birthday and foul play is suspected.
Detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) is enlisted to figure out whodunnit with any one of Thrombey’s dysfunctional family members a key suspect.
Johnson, the director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017) and Looper (2012) channels his inner Agatha Christie for this one, in an obvious tribute to the famous murder-mystery author.
The first trailer for the film introduces us to its colourful cast of characters but doesn’t reveal too much else by way of the plot.
That makes sense considering there’ll likely be a few twists and turns along the way that would better be left unknown heading into the film.
We get a good sense of the tone Johnson is trying to set with Knives Out, however, and it’s that of a quirky and stylish dark comedy.
The film features an outstanding cast that alongside Plummer and Craig include Chris Evans, Ana De Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Don Johnson, Michael Shannon, Toni Collette, LaKeith Stanfield, Katherine Langford and Jaeden Martell.
The film hits cinemas on 28 November 2019.
