Rumour has it that Javier Bardem is in talks for a role in the Frankenstein reboot, as part of the upcoming Universal Monsters film series.
To anyone unaware, Universal studios is planning to release a slate of classic monster films which started with 2014’s Dracula Untold.
Joining Dracula in their own film reboots are The Mummy, Wolf Man, Van Helsing, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Bride of Frankenstein, the Invisible Man and one mystery title (according to Wikipedia).
So far there have already been a few confirmed casting announcements, and they’re mostly big names.
Tom Cruise is set to star in The Mummy, which is filming now and he’s joined by Russell Crowe who’s playing Dr. Jekyll (of Jekyll & Hyde).
Johnny Depp has also been cast as the Invisible Man, so having Bardem join this fold seems like a good fit.
It’s still unclear as to whether or not he’s touted to play the Frankenstein monster, or Dr. Frankenstein as this is still an early rumour, nevertheless he’s a great actor and has already played a terrifying monster in the past (see No Country for Old Men).
As far as I know, the studio is planning is to release individual monster movies, with crossovers of characters, eventually culminating in an Avengers style team-up film.
The release schedule at this stage for the films is as follows:
The Mummy – June 9, 2017
Wolf Man – April 13, 2018
Untitled mystery film – February 15, 2019
Van Helsing – TBA
Creature from the Black Lagoon – TBA
Bride of Frankenstein – TBA
Invisible Man – TBA
So we should start getting one new monster film at least, from next year onwards.
Dracula Untold wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be, so there’s definitely something to look forward to in these upcoming monster films, especially with all that talent on board.
