The 90s horror movie icon, Candyman, is back and out to murder anyone silly enough to say his name five times in front of a mirror.
Nia DaCosta’s Candyman follows an artist, Anthony McCoy (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), who’s obsessed with the mythical monster, the Candyman, who once haunted the now-gentrified Chicago neighborhood where the film is set.
All this Candyman activity brings the horror icon back to wreak havoc on anyone that dares to say his name in the mirror five times, and this time, he has his eyes set on McCoy to take over the role of the hooked killer.
The film is a spiritual successor to 1992’s Candyman which saw Tony Todd play the titular character in that original film as well as its two sequels.
Todd was rumored to have a small role in this reboot and we can see a quick glimpse of him in the trailer, which is a nice nod to fans of the character.
This is only DaCosta’s second feature film following her work on 2018’s Little Woods, though she’s in good company under the guidance of Jordan Peele, who’s serving as a producer and a co-writer on the film.
Peele’s style is all over the trailer which is a promising sign for this upcoming horror film.
Horror fans are a devoted bunch and there’s nothing worse than when a horror icon from back in the day is brought back, only to feature in an average film.
It looks as though Candyman won’t be suffering that fate based on this early look at the film.
It’s set to hit cinemas on 12 June 2020, check out the scary new trailer below!
