Ryan Reynolds Plays a Video-Game NPC that Comes to Life in ‘Free Guy’

NPC referring to ‘non-playable-character’ for the non-gamers out there, which Ryan Reynolds stars as in the new action-adventure-comedy film, Free Guy.

Reynolds plays an unassuming bank-teller known as Guy, who discovers that he is an NPC living in a video-game world.

He meets and falls for a playable character, Molotov Girl, who is controlled in real life by avid gamer Milly (Jodie Comer).

Once Guy finds out he is free from his NPC constraints, he attempts to change the game’s narrative to suit his own story, one in which he’s the hero.

He’ll need to use his newfound powers to save the video-game world he inhabits after the game’s developer (Taika Waititi) decides Guy has caused too much of an uproar and tries to take the game offline.

Free Guy looks like a lot of action-movie fun and should be a hit with gamers, especially fans of the Grand Theft Auto series, of which the game world in the movie closely resembles.

GTA is notoriously popular for its general theme of lawlessness and killing of NPC’s, which is explored in the film in a humorous fashion.

Non-gamers will be drawn to Reynolds’s presence and its quirky plot, all of which looks like a good time.

The film co-stars Joe Keery, Jodie Comer, and Taika Waititi, and is directed by Shawn Levy, whose past credits include the Night at the Museum (2006-2014) films, Real Steel (2011) and Date Night (2010).

If all goes to plan, Free Guy will release in cinemas from 10 December 2020.
