Ben Affleck plays a high-school basketball coach on the road to redemption in the upcoming emotional drama film The Way Back from director Gavin O’Connor.
Affleck stars as a former basketball phenom who now, as an adult, is suffering from alcoholism.
He’s offered a coaching job at his former high-school and when his underdog team begins to rise up from a losing streak, he becomes inspired and decides to confront his inner demons.
The Way Back looks like a multi-layered drama film that tackles themes of personal afflictions under the guise of a classic underdog sports movie.
Oscar-winner Ben Affleck appears to be in excellent form in this emotional new film, which is sure to set off some waterworks from its viewers.
Gavin O’Connor directs Affleck again for the second time following their pairing on the underrated thriller The Accountant (2016).
While there’s no doubt this film will be touching, there’s also a chance that it might be a bit too schmaltzy for its own good.
Nevertheless, uplifting stories like this one that involve sports are always entertaining and tend to achieve their goal of evoking an emotional reaction from the audience.
The Way Back is due out in cinemas on 5 March 2020.
