Dwayne Johnson headlines the upcoming film Skyscraper, which looks like a pure throwback to popular action movies of the 80’s and 90’s – which is a good thing.
Anyone that grew up with films like Die Hard (1988), True Lies (1994), Commando (1985) and Speed (1994) should be in for a treat here.
Skyscraper follows a former FBI agent turned security advisor for high-rise buildings forced into a thrilling hostage-situation, where he must fight to save his family.
It’s as classic a plot as it gets for this type of genre film, and judging by the first trailer, the film looks like it will be full of exhilarating action, much like the aforementioned classics.
While the action films of the 80’s and 90’s were dominated by the likes of Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jean Claude Van Damme, it is Dwayne Johnson who has been dominating the field in the modern era.
He continues his run in Skyscraper, in a role that is essentially perfect for the action hero.
The things that made the old classics of the genre so great was the wit and charm that came along with the violence and gore, so we can only hope this film takes a page out of their books.
It definitely seems like the action is on point here, so it will come down to whether or not this film has any type of heart.
Johnson will draw the crowds regardless, so it probably won’t matter too much either way.
He’s joined by Neve Campbell, Pablo Schreiber, Chin Han and Noah Taylor in supporting roles.
The film is directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber; and interesting choice considering the director’s background in comedy (having directed 2004’s Dodgeball and 2013’s We’re the Millers amongst others).
Skyscraper hits cinemas in the US on 13 July 2018, and expect a release date near to that here in Australia.
