‘Dune’ Trailer Teases an Epic Science-Fiction Like Never Before

The new trailer for Denis Villeneuve’s epic science-fiction film Dune is filled with stunning cinematography and rich lore.

Based on the classic Frank Herbert novel of the same nameDune follows Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet), a gifted young man destined to become the saviour of his people.

Atreides finds himself on the most dangerous planet in the universe, in the middle of a war for ownership of the galaxy’s most precious resource, the ‘spice’: a resource that will give humanity the power to unlock their most tremendous potential.

Denis Villeneuve, whose past work such as Blade Runner 2049 (2017) and Arrival (2016) have already cemented the director as one of the best in epic science-fiction movie production, looks like he’s delivered another winner in Dune.

The film looks like it can take the sci-fi genre to the next level, with outstanding VFX and production design and a dense story to boot.

Villeneuve’s movies have always featured beautiful cinematography, with the legendary Roger Deakins taking home an Oscar for his work on Blade Runner 2049.

This time around, the director has enlisted the help of Greig Fraser, who, like Deakins, has some excellent titles in his repertoire, including Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) and Zero Dark Thirty (2012)amongst others.

Fraser’s work on Dune looks outstanding and should place him as a frontrunner at the Academy Awards.

Despite the obvious visual and world-building potential available adapting a novel like Dune, it is widely known that the book is a nightmare to put to film.

One of the best in David Lynch tried it in 1984, and it ended up being a massive flop.

The lessons learned from that production and the credibility of Denis Villeneuve have given this sci-fi franchise a new lease on life in what could end up being a modern cinematic classic.

Dune is out in cinemas from 21 October 2021.
