Emma Stone stars as the classic Disney villain Cruella de Vil in the new live-action prequel to 101 Dalmatians (1961).
The film explores the making of the classic Disney villain Cruella de Vil, following her story as a young woman ‘born bad’, to her transformation as the dalmatian-hating villain of Disney’s 1961 animated film 101 Dalmatians.
The animation already received a live-action adaptation starring Glenn Close as the titular character back in 1996, and it seems wise that Disney has opted for a prequel to renew the property, as opposed to another remake.
Wise in the sense that the studio can explore the background of this classic Disney villain while bringing something original to their slate of remakes, that include the likes of The Lion King (2019), and Aladdin (2019), which should also help with the remake fatigue that audiences may be experiencing.
Emma Stone looks fantastic in the role and feels like a great fit for the evil high-fashion designer.
There’s also a somewhat gritty feel to the film, but we can see from the trailer that it’s limited, and the Disney sheen is still ever-present.
Cruella co-stars Emma Thompson, Paul Walter Hauser, Emily Beacham, Joel Fry, Kirby Howell Baptiste, and Mark Strong, and is due for release on 27 May 2021.
