All-Star Cast Gathers for Courtroom Drama ‘The Trial of the Chicago 7’

Oscar-winner Aaron Sorkin directs an all-star cast in the new courtroom drama The Trial of the Chicago 7 for Netflix.

Based on a true story, The Trial of the Chicago 7 follows the trial of 7 activists, who in 1968, attempted a peaceful protest opposing the Vietnam War at the Democratic National Convention, which turned into a violent clash with police.

The group was thereafter charged with conspiracy to incite a riot, and the trial that followed caught the attention of the entire world.

Sorkin is well known for his dialogue-heavy writing style so a courtroom drama seems fitting for his latest movie, and the trial he’s chosen to cover has the potential for some riveting viewing.

The film looks intriguing based on its trailer, and the casting is something to behold, however, the trailer misses the much-needed suspense that can often be found in popular courtroom dramas like 12 Angry Men (1957) and A Time to Kill (1996).

Courtroom dramas need an element of suspense to keep audiences hooked, so it will be interesting to see if Sorkin has captured any in his re-telling of this historical event.

Nevertheless, with a cast that includes the likes of Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Sacha Baron Cohen, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Michael Keaton, Frank Langella, John Carroll Lynch, Eddie Redmayne, Mark Rylance, Alex Sharp, and Jeremy Strong, there’s plenty of reasons for people to tune into this one.

See it on Netflix from 16 October 2020.
