Clint Eastwood directs and stars in The Mule (his first writing/directing combo since 2008’s Gran Torino), where he plays a drug smuggler for a Mexican cartel.
A down-on-his-luck ageing veteran (Eastwood) signs on as a courier to make some extra cash, though initially unbeknownst to him, he finds that he is smuggling drugs for a Mexican crime cartel.
Not only is the cartel keeping a close eye on the vet, but the DEA, led by agent Colin Bates (Bradley Cooper), are also hot on his tail.
The first trailer for The Mule goes heavy on the dramatic tone of the film.
We see that Eastwood’s character Earl Stone feels like he hasn’t fulfilled his family’s expectations of him while struggling to stay afloat after his business is foreclosed.
The trailer opens with a tense scene of Earl almost about to get busted for carrying a large bag of narcotics, right before it cuts to glimpses of other scenes from the film (cliffhanger much!).
Needless to say, I was hooked from that initial scene and The Mule looks like it could be right up there with some of the actor/director’s best recent work.
The film also features a great supporting cast that includes Bradley Cooper, Dianne Wiest, Michael Peña, and Laurence Fishburne, along with Andy Garcia and Taissa Farmiga.
The Mule looks like it will be pretty heavy-handed based on this early first look, and is due out in the US on 14 December 2018.
It’ll likely hit other territories in 2019.
