Check out the trailer for the new comedy-drama film Battle of the Sexes, based on a true story and starring Emma Stone and Steve Carell.
The film is loosely based on the real-life 1973 tennis match between then world number 1 Billie Jean King (Emma Stone) against Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell).
I don’t know much about the real events of the tennis match, however judging by the trailer for the film, it looks as though it was all one big publicity stunt instigated by Carell’s character Bobby Riggs – a self-proclaimed chauvinist.
The film is directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, the directing duo behind Little Miss Sunshine (2006), and it looks like their new one may follow suit tone-wise.
Battle of the Sexes looks like it will have a comedy-first approach, but without ignoring some of the deeper issues such as the stereotypical attitudes between men and women of that time.
Carell and Stone both appear to be putting in their best efforts based on the footage we can see in the trailer, making me wonder if this film will receive some award recognition.
Battle of the Sexes also stars Andrea Riseborough, Elisabeth Shue, Alan Cumming and Sarah Silverman, and is due out on 28 September 2017.
