The Merger is an upcoming Australian AFL-themed comedy film that sees a bunch of misfits come together to save a footy club and tackle ignorance in a small country town.
The film follows Troy Carrington (Damian Callinan), a former professional Australian Rules football player who returns home to his small country town after his sporting career comes to an abrupt end.
There he goes on to attempt to save his local footy club from folding by enlisting a group of refugees to become players, much to the chagrin of some of the town’s residents.
The Merger looks like a hoot based on the film’s trailer below and it features a classic mix of Aussie sarcasm and larrikin humour.
Director Ari Sandel does focus heavily on more emphatic issues too, however, bringing the townspeople’s divided opinions on refugees to the forefront.
Australian comedies are renowned for tackling sensitive themes on a comedic backdrop, with great success.
The Merger looks to follow that trend and it appears to cover all bases successfully if the trailer is anything to go by.
The film also stars Kate Mulvany and John Howard and will receive a nationwide release on 6 September 2018.
Furthermore, The Merger will have early screening premiers at the following venues and dates:
CinefestOZ WA Premiere – 24 August 2018
