Chastain plays a black ops assassin who’s done wrong by the organization she works for, and must then fight to survive in the action-thriller, Ava.
It’s a fairly generic plot for this type of film; the international assassin who becomes the target of the organization she works for, and must then fight back.
What Ava has going for it is the inclusion of acclaimed actress Jessica Chastain in the lead role, her first as a fully-fledged action heroine.
She definitely looks the part and her physicality looks impressive based on the trailer, though the quality of the film seems beneath her.
The trailer just screams “we’ve seen it all before”, so it’ll be interesting to see what director Tate Taylor can bring to the table.
Taylor’s record has been mixed, having directed the Oscar-winning film The Help (2011), the enjoyable horror-thriller Ma (2019), and more recently, the snooze-fest thriller film based on the best-selling novel, The Girl on the Train (2016).
John Malkovich and Colin Farrell also star, so maybe there’s something more to this film than we know to attract such a high-caliber cast.
In any case, Ava does look like a bit of violent fun and should please fans of the action film genre.
It’s currently scheduled for release on 25 September 2020.
