Popular singer-songwriter Janelle Monáe stars in the mind-bending new horror-thriller film Antebellum, from the producer of Get Out (2017) and Us (2019).
Janelle Monáe plays Veronica, a successful author who winds up in a nightmarish reality, as she’s forced to uncover the mystery behind how she got there, and escape with her life.
There’s not too much detail given in the new trailer below, though it appears she’s kidnapped and thrown into some type of disturbing new reality as a slave in a plantation.
The film’s title itself means ‘occurring or existing before a particular war, especially the US Civil War’, which seems to confirm the plantation setting.
Antebellum comes from the producer of the smash-hit horror films Get Out (2017) and Us (2019), so fans can expect a terrifying psychological element to this one.
On the casting side, Janelle Monáe looks to have put in a great performance, with the singer-songwriter continuing her successful transition into film.
Her past credits include roles in acclaimed drama films like Moonlight (2016), Hidden Figures (2016), and Harriet (2019), so Antebellum will give Monáe a chance to show her range.
Antebellum looks like an edge-of-your-seat psychological horror with a lot of potential and is due out in cinemas on 21 August 2020.
