The acclaimed Australian author’s novel Dirt Music has been adapted to film, in what looks set to be a melodramatic, emotional journey.

Kelly Macdonald plays Georgie, a disheartened woman seeking a way out of a loveless marriage to a local fisherman, Jim (David Wenham), when she meets Lu (Garrett Hedlund), a stranger with a tragic past with whom she begins an affair.

The attraction between them ignites a conflict that binds the trio in a battle of inner demons.

Set in the West Australian outback, Dirt Music is a romance film with a heavily dramatic tone.

Australian author Tim Winton’s novel of the same name was shortlisted for the Booker prize in 2002 and won the Miles Franklin Award the same year.

Dirt Music is one of many of Winton’s works to receive a big-screen adaptation, with Breath being the most recent in 2017.

The film looks like one with a gripping, grounded story that should please fans of the author as well as romance-drama genre fans.

Kelly Macdonald, Garrett Hedlund, and David Wenham all appear to be in top form and make for great casting choices.

The film features original music written and performed by popular Australian musician Julia Stone and is set against the stunning backdrop of Western Australia.

The casting, performances, score, and cinematography is all on point, and director Gregor Jordan of Two Hands (1999) and Ned Kelly (2003) fame appears to have captured the friction and emotional tension between the characters excellently.

Dirt Music is coming soon to cinemas in 2020.
