Dreamworks Animation has followed up their hit 2016 animated kids film Trolls with Trolls World Tour, which sees the cute fantasy creatures embark on a new musical journey.
In World Tour, Poppy (Anna Kendrick) and Branch (Justin Timberlake) discover that they are but one of 6 different troll tribes located around the world, all of which have their own affiliation to different types of music.
There are Pop, Country, Funk, Techno, Classical and Rock tribes in the Troll world and Poppy and Branch must set out to stop the evil Rock Goddess Queen Barb (Rachel Bloom) and her father King Thrash (Ozzy Osbourne), whose goal is to unite the 6 ‘strings’ of musical tribes and destroy music for good… All except for Rock, of course.
The trailer for this sequel is a music and animation fan’s dream, featuring classic songs and scores from the above-listed genres.
The animation is bright and colourful and the Trolls look cuter than ever.
The film seems like a nice entry point into introducing younger audiences to music they may not otherwise be accustom to, all while providing some fun entertainment.
While the film is obviously targeted to younger audiences, there’s a lot for adults to enjoy here too, and being a Dreamworks Production, the studio behind films like the How to Train Your Dragon (2010-19) and Kung Fu Panda (2008-16) series, there’s certainly something for all ages here.
The Troll characters are based on a popular toy doll line originally released in 1959 and are still going strong after 50 years in the public consciousness.
Alongside Kendrick, Timberlake, Bloom and Osbourne are James Corden, Jamie Dornan, Kelly Clarkson and Sam Rockwell in supporting voice-roles.
The film is due for release on 17 April 2020.
