Peter Farrelly’s Green Book follows an unlikely friendship form on a road trip through America’s deep south during the racially charged 1960’s.
Viggo Mortensen plays Tony Lip, an Italian-American bouncer who becomes a driver for the African-American classical pianist, Don Shirley, played by Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali.
From opposing worlds, the two characters form a friendship as they travel through the racially tense American south.
The film looks to tackle sensitive themes such as the treatment of African-Americans during that infamous period in America’s culture.
But also more positive themes like friendship and the co-existence between two invariably different cultures and personalities.
It definitely looks like the kind of film that could do well in awards-season.
Mortensen and Ali appear to be in top form performance-wise and seem to share a great chemistry between them.
Ali recently won the Best Actor Oscar for his work in 2016’s Moonlight, and twice Oscar-nominated Mortensen was recently seen in the outstanding Captain Fantastic (2016).
Director Peter Farrelly, most known for his co-directing work on comedies like Dumb and Dumber (1994), Me, Myself & Irene (2000) and Hall Pass (2000) takes his first turn at directing a drama here.
However, there’s definitely some humour in this film, so it should work on multiple fronts.
Green Book is due out in cinemas on 24 January 2019.
