A college graduate lands a dream job as a personal assistant to a leading entertainment executive and soon discovers her workplace is rife with abuse in The Assistant.
Film and television star Julia Garner plays a recent college graduate and budding film producer who scores a coveted role as an assistant to an entertainment mogul.
Soon after, she begins to realize that she’s joined a toxic workplace, one where her fellow (male) co-workers all appear to be in on a secret surrounding the comings and goings of female clients.
It’s only after she makes a complaint to management that she discovers how far the system will go to silence its staff about workplace abuse.
The Assistant aims to highlight the theme of toxicity and abuse in the workplace, a relevant theme off the back of the recent #metoo movement.
Based on the trailer, we can see the film will be a slow-burn, building tension in a quiet, awkward, and eerie manner.
It looks like the film isn’t looking to sensationalize the themes, but rather it’s going for a visceral approach, which should serve audiences that can sit through it well.
Garner is a bonafide star who’s on the verge of breaking out into the mainstream, having already featured in super-popular TV shows such as Ozark and Dirty John for Netflix, and movies We Are What We Are (2013) and Martha Marcy May Marlene (2011).
Matthew Macfadyen of Succession fame also stars and is an actor that’s always entertaining to watch.
The Assistant arrives on DVD and VOD from 28 April 2020.
