Blumhouse has subverted the horror genre once again with the new film Freaky starring Vince Vaughn and Kathryn Newton.
Freaky follows teenager Millie (Kathryn Newton) as she navigates through the pressures that come with high school life.
Millie falls victim to the town’s serial killer (Vince Vaughn) but instead of being killed, a supernatural event occurs and the pair swap bodies in a Freaky Friday situation (hence the title).
Shenanigans ensue as Millie, now trapped in the body of a middle-aged man, must try and convince her friends she is who she says she is, and the serial killer, in Millie’s body, begins offing her friends one-by-one.
Freaky looks to do what Happy Death Day (2017) and Happy Death Day 2U (2019) did to the Groundhog Day formula, but with the body-swap sub sub-genre of cinema – and that is apply a comedy-horror element in a high-school setting – a formula that worked well for the above two films.
Fans will be happy to know that the same director, Christopher Landon, is also directing Freaky.
The film looks like a genuine good time based on the first trailer, offering equal amounts of dark comedy with “horror”, the term being used loosely because it’s likely this film won’t be very scary.
Freaky is due to arrive in theatres on 13 November 2020, check out the cool trailer below.
