Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard star in the trippy new musical film, Annette, from acclaimed director Leos Carax and written by the Sparks brothers.
Driver plays a standup comedian who forms a relationship with a famous opera singer (Cottilard), and the pair have a child together, a baby girl with an extraordinary gift.
We can’t see what this gift is from the first trailer below or the specific tone the film is going for.
Instead, the trailer focuses on the trippy visual aspects of the film and some of the featured music.
While the plot is relatively ambiguous, the music and visuals are of a high order, which comes as no surprise considering Annette comes from the visionary mind of the director of Holy Motors (2012) and the musical genius of the Sparks brothers.
Ron and Russell Mael have impacted the music industry for more than five decades and have gone chiefly unrecognised from the mainstream eye.
They were recently the subject of an excellent documentary by Edgar Wright called The Sparks Brothers (2021), and they bring their considerable talents to this production.
Annette will feature at this year’s Cannes film festival, followed by an exclusive Amazon Prime Video release on 20 August 2021.
