2017 must be the year of Stephen King, with multiple film and TV adaptations of his work released, the latest – the psychological-horror Gerald’s Game.
Gerald Burlingame (Bruce Greenwood) drops dead from a heart-attack after some kinky foreplay with his wife Jessie (Carla Gugino).
Handcuffed to the bed and unable to move, Jessie starts to go mad and see and hear things, whilst desperately trying to escape.
Gerald’s Game will be exclusively released by streaming giant Netflix, and judging by the trailer below, it looks like it will be a satisfying ride through the psychological-horror sub-genre.
Knowing King’s work (but not having read the book this film is based on), there will likely be some fantastical elements in this one, however the filmmakers look like they’ve hit the mark on the psychological-horror front.
The film features an excellent principal cast that includes Carla Gugino and Bruce Greenwood, and is directed by Mike Flanagan, who directed the awesome horror film Hush (2016).
King has seen many of his book adaptations hit both the big screen and small screen in 2017, with about a 50/50 success ratio.
For instance, the film adaptation of one of his most popular books, The Dark Tower, was poorly received (see my review here).
However, the adaptation of his book IT, has been receiving rave reviews (see our review here).
Likewise, the TV series The Mist was met with a mixed reaction, and his other TV series Mr. Mercedes has been getting some positive buzz.
Gerald’s Game releases on Netflix on 29 September.
Are we Stephen King’d-out by this point, or do we want to see more of his work turned into moving pictures?
