Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep Star in ‘The Post’ – Trailer

Meryl Streep the post

A first look at Spielberg’s highly anticipated political drama shows Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep taking on the Supreme Court to ensure the rights of free press.

In the modern world of fake news and Wiki-Leaks, Steven Spielberg’s upcoming film The Post feels highly relevant and poignant, centering on a 1971 US political scandal.

Based on the script co-written by Liz Hannah and Josh Singer (Spotlight), it portrays the events behind the Washington Post’s decision to publish The Pentagon Papers.

These classified papers establish that the Johnson Administration had lied to the public and congress about US military involvement in the Vietnam War, and revealed how the Nixon administration had secretly escalated the war.

Set in 1971, the film will focus on The Washington Post’s war with the White House over whether the newspaper had the right to publish these top-secret military documents.

Meryl Streep plays America’s first female newspaper publisher Katharine Graham, who along with established Post editor Ben Bradlee (Tom Hanks), risks the future of the paper by going up against the Nixon administration.

They are supported by a stellar cast that includes Sarah Paulson, Bob Odenkirk, Bradley Whitford, Jesse Plemons, Carrie Coon and Alison Brie.

Unsurprisingly, The Post is already generating Oscar buzz and will be released on selected US screens from the 22 December 2017 for a quick awards run before going on general release.

Australian audiences will be able to see it from the 12 January 2018.
