After their first Tinder date goes awry, a young couple become fugitives on the run from the law in the upcoming film, Queen & Slim.
Newcomer Jodie Turner-Smith and Daniel Kaluuya, who people will recognise from Get Out (2017) and Black Panther (2018) star as the titular young couple, Queen and Slim, respectively.
The potential young lovers’ Tinder date is going well until an overzealous police officer pulls them over later in the evening.
The officer’s racially charged behaviour causes a kerfuffle, which results in Slim shooting and killing the policeman.
Rather than turning themselves in, the couple embarks on a journey across the country, evading the law and becoming nationwide folk heroes along the way.
It’s your classic Bonnie & Clyde story for the current generation and first-time director Melina Matsoukas appears to have adapted it to modern standards quite well.
The on-screen chemistry between Kaluuya and Turner-Smith looks spot-on from the little we’re shown in the trailer, and it looks like the type of film that could have people divided over the moral quandary’s that are touched upon in the film.
Either way, there’s no doubt that the audience will be rooting for the lead characters in this one, despite their criminal behaviour, because that’s what we audiences love.
Bokeem Woodbine and Chloë Sevigny co-star, and the film is due for release on 27 November 2019.
