The new Australian period drama The Drover’s Wife The Legend of Molly Johnson promises to deliver a deep look at a woman that will stop at nothing to protect her family.
Molly Johnson (Leah Purcell) is left alone in the remote Snowy Mountains to defend her home and family while her husband is away droving cattle.
The arrival of the indigenous outlaw Yadaka (Rob Collins) forces a mother’s courageous, protective side to come out.
The Drover’s Wife The Legend of Molly Johnson is based on the play of the same name by writer/director/star Leah Purcell and features some stunning imagery as a backdrop to some heavy, dramatic themes.
Johnson is heavily pregnant and alone and must protect her home and family while dealing with racial tensions and corrupt officials in what is essentially a kill-or-be-killed environment.
The setting and themes look like they’ve brought out the best in Leah Purcell’s performance, and Rob Collins at her side is excellent.
We can see from the trailer that the film is intense and multi-layered with a lot more going on beneath the surface and features thought-provoking themes.
The film releases in Australian cinemas on 14 October 2021 and is also due to open this year’s Melbourne International Film Festival.
