Teaser Trailer for Live-Action Adaptation of Disney’s ‘Mulan’ Has Dropped

Disney’s run of live-action adaptations of its classic animated properties continues with the teaser trailer for Mulan, and it looks like a fitting re-imagining.

Mulan (2020) tells the story of the young Chinese maiden Mulan (Yifei Liu), who disguises herself as a man to join the country’s Imperial Army and defend her nation in her ailing father’s place.

Curiously, the first teaser trailer doesn’t bring that aspect to light, but rather, it chooses to focus on one part of the story that involves Mulan’s family finding her a suitor for marriage.

The voiceover narration then goes on to talk about specific qualities that make Mulan a good wife, finally closing with the titular character mentioning that it’s her duty to fight.

I can’t recall whether or not the arranged marriage angle was even in the 1998 animated film of the same name (maybe someone can help me out in the comments), however, if it wasn’t, then it could serve as original material for this new adaptation, giving Mulan more of an incentive to become a warrior, against her family’s wishes.

In any case, the film features some stunning cinematography which looks to have been shot in picturesque China, along with glimpses of the action we can expect.

The film consists of a predominantly Chinese cast and co-starring alongside Liu are Donnie Yen, Jason Scott Lee, Yoson An, Gong Li, and Jet Li.

Scott Lee is the most interesting addition to this cast as the actor has seemingly disappeared from the Hollywood circuit since his star turn in Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story (1993).

We’ve already seen Dumbo and Aladdin release this year, with The Lion King just around the corner to keep fans busy before this one arrives on 27 March 2020.

Mulan is directed by Niki Caro of Whale Rider (2002) and The Zookeeper’s Wife (2017) fame.

Check out the cool new teaser below.
