Peter Jackson produced and penned the screenplay for the epic, upcoming sci-fi/fantasy film Mortal Engines, directed by Christian Rivers.
The film is set in a post-apocalyptic world where cities survive by moving around on giant wheels, devouring smaller wheeled cities to survive.
The first teaser trailer does a good job at conveying the basic plot outline, as we’re introduced to some unnamed characters on one of these smaller wheeled cities, that get swallowed up by an enormous wheeled city, which is apparently London in that world.
Aside from that, we’re not shown much else, but we can see the film features some great, steampunk-inspired art direction, which seems fitting considering director Christian Rivers has worked as art director on a lot of Jackson’s past films.
It’s always risky giving a first-time director such a potentially huge franchise, however having Jackson behind the scenes can only help.
This potential new franchise is based on the award-winning novel series of the same name by Phillip Reeve, which lasted 4 books.
The film stars Robert Sheehan, Hera Hilmar, Hugo Weaving, Leila George, Ronan Raftery, Jihae, Patrick Malahide, and Stephen Lang, and is not due out for another full year here in Australia (26 December 2018)!
As is common place these days though, the marketing has started nice and early.
