A new indie film from Melbourne, Sugar Cube, is set to be released on October 30th, with the film featuring a lot of familiar places and scenes for Melbournians.
The film is written, produced and directed by Luke Jacobson, who also plays a supporting cast member.
Sugar Cube follows James (Matt Marasco), a barista who is in love with his best friend Sarah (Tess Dobrè), despite living in fear his feelings aren’t reciprocated.
The film shows their journey as friends and possibly more, as James supports Sarah through her often turbulent love life, all the while thinking he could be what she’s been looking for all along.
It’s always nice to see Australian-made movies, especially when they romanticise the Melbourne café scene, which for many of us is a part of everyday life.
I especially look forward to seeing Tess Dobrè showcase her character’s self-destructive nature when it comes to men and seeing how James falls in love with her despite it all.
It’s so refreshing to see leading female characters who aren’t damsels in distress, but complicated women with their own complex issues and trauma, and realistic hang-ups in relationships.
