The award-winning Studio Ghibli ventures into the world of 3D animation for the first time with their latest, Earwig and the Witch.
Earwig and the Witch follows the story of a young orphan girl who is adopted by a witch and taken to a spooky home where she begins to learn witchcraft and magic.
It comes out of Japan’s multi-award winning animation studio, Studio Ghibli, and is their first film since 2014s When Marnie Was There.
The famous studio is best known for producing iconic animated films like My Neighbor Totoro (1988), Spirited Away (2001), and Howl’s Moving Castle (2004), all of which were directed by Ghibli’s legendary founder, Hayao Miyazaki.
Earwig and the Witch is directed by Hayao’s son, Gorō Miyazaki, and judging by the trailer below, the film captures all of the same quirky and outlandish aspects that feature prominently in Ghibli works.
Fans can expect a heartwarming and humorous family-friendly adventure with this new animated film, containing 3D animation, which is new for the studio.
The animation looks great, though it’s not quite at the same level of excellence produced by Hollywood studios like Disney-Pixar and Dreamworks.
Nevertheless, it retains its own style and charm, and is a nice change from the style we’re used to seeing from Studio Ghibli.
Earwig and the Witch hits Australian cinemas on 4 February 2021 (3 Feb in the US).
