After the horrific event that was the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, everyone was talking about one of the most graphic photos to be portrayed in the news.
The photo depicted Jeff Bauman being wheeled to safety, bloodied from the bombing.
Jeff has since written the novel Stronger, a New York Times best seller that describes how he lost both legs in the terror attack.
The film based on the novel of the same name is directed by David Gordon Green, and stars Jake Gyllenhaal as Jeff Bauman and Tatiana Maslany as Jeff’s partner Erin Hurley.
The film tells Bauman’s story from before he lost his legs, through to his long and lengthy recovery, and also focuses heavily on Jeff’s relationship with partner Erin, who was running the marathon as Jeff supported her when the bombs were detonated.
Although Stronger is receiving numerous positive reviews, it has been criticised for casting Jake Gyllenhaal as a double amputee, when there are many talented disabled actors who could have played the role.
Despite Gyllenhaal’s highly researched performance, critics claim that creative choices like this are the reason that many disabled actors don’t rise to fame.
Gyllenhaal worked with Jeff Bauman himself to make sure the film was authentic, and to create a film that shows the true terror of the bombing and the personal impact this event had on everyday people.
Stronger is released on 19 October 2017 in Australia.
