Aardman and Studiocanal recently announced that Shaun the Sheep Movie 2, the sequel to the acclaimed 2015 film will begin pre-production in January 2017.
Richard Starzak, co-director of the first Shaun the Sheep Movie is set to return to the director’s chair for the sequel, along with producer Paul Kewley, who also returns.
The first film was released in 2015, received an Oscar nomination and was praised by fans and critics alike, currently holding a score of 99% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 7.1/10 fan score on IMDB.
The Executive Chairman at Aardman (the studio behind Wallace & Gromit and Chicken Run), David Sproxton, had this to say about the new film’s announcement:
“Shaun’s move to the big screen proved such a success with audiences around the world that he and the flock are very excited to be embarking on another big screen adventure. Aardman is partnering with STUDIOCANAL once again to produce another rip-roaring comedy, featuring Shaun and the rest of the gang in a story that takes them to even greater heights of lunacy.“
The first film grossed $106 million worldwide and was deemed a success, paving the way for the sequel.
Admittedly I haven’t seen 2015’s Shaun the Sheep, but looking at the critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it sounds like it is a must-see.
There’s no release date set for the sequel as yet, however as pre-production has yet to begin, my guess is it’ll be due some time in late 2018 or early 2019, and we’ll have more details as they emerge.
In the meantime check out the trailer of the first film below for anyone else that may not have seen it yet, along with the official announcement image from the sequel.
