Big Little Lies star Shailene Woodley’s latest project Adrift is a film about the resilience of the human spirit in the face of overwhelming odds.
Adrift is a romantic-drama based on the true story of a young couple’s 1983 journey across the Pacific Ocean, that sees them caught in one of the most catastrophic hurricanes in recorded history.
Woodley stars alongside Sam Claflin, best known for his role as Finnick in The Hunger Games (2014-15) and 2016’s Me Before You.
They play the free spirits Tami Oldham and Richard Sharp, whose chance encounter leads them to love.
Together they set sail on a yacht from Tahiti to California, unaware of the category five hurricane that is to come.
Acclaimed director Baltasar Kormákur has a proven track record of handling movies about self-determination and survival, having filmed 2015’s Everest and the 2012 Icelandic drama The Deep.
Twin brothers Aaron and Jordan Kandell, who previously contributed to the Disney film Moana (2016), penned the screenplay based on the book “Red Sky in Mourning: A True Story of Love, Loss, and Survival at Sea”.
At a glance, the film seems reminiscent of The Perfect Storm (2000), with a dose of romance and some serious heartbreak.
I have a sneaking suspicious a box of tissues won’t go astray.
Adrift is set to release in Australian cinemas on 28 June 2018.
