With the news of the recent exit of the film’s original directors, Disney has chosen its replacement for their Han Solo spinoff wisely.
Howard steps in to replace the directing duo of Chris Miller and Phil Lord, whom recently left the project citing creative differences.
The duo had directed The Lego Movie (2014) as well as 21 Jump Street (2012) and its sequel prior to landing the gig for Disney.
The news came as a shock to fans, with the Han Solo film due for release in less than a year since the news broke (due out in May 2018).
However, if anyone can step in to take over the reigns and complete the job, then it’s veteran director Ron Howard.
Having directed hits like Apollo 13 (1995) and A Beautiful Mind (2001) amongst a slew of other big budget productions, Howard definitely has what it takes to see this project through to the end.
Whether or not he’ll have much of a creative input is questionable, as it seems to me like Kathleen Kennedy and the Disney execs are pulling all the strings here.
In any case, if the film has a good script and ends up being entertaining, then it won’t matter who gets the directing credit.
Alden Ehrenreich is cast as the young Han Solo, and he’s joined by Emilia Clarke, Woody Harrelson, Donald Glover, Thandie Newton and Michael Kenneth Williams in supporting roles.
