The new sci-fi thriller Reminiscence features Hugh Jackman play a ‘mind detective’ on a mission to solve the disappearance of a former lover.
Hugh Jackman plays Nick Bannister, a private investigator of the mind, helping people uncover lost memories and relive nostalgia in an unliveable world.
After taking on a new client, Mae (Rebecca Ferguson), Bannister becomes dangerously obsessed with solving the mystery of her disappearance.
The general plot of Reminiscence is straightforward enough; however, it seems that Jackman’s character is connected to the missing woman, a former lover.
Did he not recognise her when she walked in asking to have her memories restored, and when did she disappear if she’s standing in front of him?
That aspect of the trailer didn’t make much sense, so it must be something that will be explored in the film.
Reminiscence feels like a part mystery, part thriller, part sci-fi, and part romance movie, and it’s wholly intriguing.
Hugh Jackman looks in excellent form, and he’s joined by Thandie Newton alongside Rebecca Ferguson and Cliff Curtis in supporting roles.
The film is directed by the co-creator of the hit TV show Westworld, Lisa Joy, and fans of the series should recognise similar mystery plot devices coming from this film.
Westworld was notorious for drip-feeding information to audiences, keeping them guessing at every turn, so we can be sure to expect more of that in this film.
Reminiscence is due for release in cinemas from 19 August 2021.
