The District 9 (2009), Elysium (2013) and Chappie (2015) director releases his new (short) film Rakka, featuring a familiar face and some gorgeous visuals.
The short film comes out of Blomkamp’s own newly formed production studio Oats Studios, and sees its protagonists struggling for survival against an alien race that has taken over and destroyed Earth.
At the forefront is Sigourney Weaver, who has worked with Blomkamp before in 2015’s Chappie.
At 20 minutes long, Rakka is long enough to allow plenty of world and character building, and it does so excellently.
Another notable highlight is the visual effects on display, which easily match anything we see in major modern blockbusters (and even surpasses some).
Blomkamp hit the scene in a big way with his first film District 9, however his following films Elysium and Chappie were mostly panned by critics, however I enjoyed both.
He still remains a fan-favourite though, as his new short film has received lots of buzz pre, and post release.
The latest rumour is that Blomkamp’s next project will be set in the Alien universe and star Sigourney Weaver, though it’s all very up in the air at the moment.
Check out Rakka and leave a Facebook comment with your thoughts.
