Paul Thomas Anderson and Daniel Day-Lewis (in his final role) reunite for the new drama Phantom Thread, set in the 1950’s fashion world.
But like most of PTA’s other work, there’s a lot more going on here than a simple synopsis can surmise.
Day-Lewis plays a dressmaker that’s commissioned to design garments for high-society-type folk and the royal family.
Along the way he meets a woman that he falls in love with, but as we can see in the trailer, Day-Lewis’s complex character appears to be not of the type destined for love.
Paul Thomas Anderson is a master at writing complex characters and narratives, and it looks like Phantom Thread will be no different.
The film appears to feature a well-developed character study, one that delves a lot deeper into the human psyche compared to other dramas of a similar nature.
Day-Lewis looks to follow his impeccable performance in There Will Be Blood (2007 – his last team-up with PTA) with another similarly brilliant and intricate performance here.
The film also stars Lesley Manville, Vicky Krieps and Richard Graham and is due for release on 25 December 2017 in the USA, but February 2018 in most other territories.
