Steve McQueen, the Academy-Award winning director of 12 Years a Slave (2013) has signed on to direct a new documentary about rap’s biggest icon.
The acclaimed director will be working in conjunction with Shakur Estate trustee Tom Whalley and Amaru Entertainment, the production company created by Tupac’s late mother.
“Few, if any shined brighter than Tupac Shakur. I look forward to working closely with his family to tell the unvarnished story of this talented man.” Said McQueen in a recent statement.
Tupac became one of the most influential rap artists of all time after only a short 5-year professional career, going on to sell over 75 million albums worldwide.
Sadly the artist was shot dead in 1996, however his legacy lives on to this day.
Steve McQueen is one of the most exciting working directors today, so it’ll be very interesting to see how he handles this documentary.
As a fan of McQueen, I would have loved to have seen him direct a feature-length film on the rapper rather than a documentary, however anything that comes out from the director will be worth a look.
As far as movies about the late rapper go, All Eyez on Me is due out soon and if you haven’t already done so, you can check out the trailer for it here.
