Netflix Documentaries to Give You Thrills, Chills and Possibly Spills

thrilling netflix documentaries

Check out Janks’ recommendations for some provocative Netflix documentaries that will have you feeling all sorts of different emotions.

We all love a great, thrilling documentary.

Some of us love a great, uplifting documentary.

Others love to feel enraged, mortified, petrified, shocked to their cores.

The following list of Netflix documentaries will cover all of the above bases and will be sure to stick with you for a long time afterwards.

Click the titles to add them to your Netflix queue.

The Great Hack

This is truly one of the more terrifying documentaries on this list (and there are several, which says a lot).

The Great Hack covers the Cambridge Analytica scandal that the world was unfortunate enough to have to bear witness to in recent years.

The scariest part about the situation outlined in this film is that anyone can become an unwilling subject of ‘big data’ companies, falling victim to their influence based on the agenda of whoever’s paying them.

It’s a pure eye-opening experience for the audience, one that may leave you shook.

Tickled

So some people like to get paid to be tickled, whilst being videotaped.

Seems harmless enough for those involved, right?

Well, sure it is… Until it isn’t.

This one turns dark pretty fast and is one of the more bizarre documentaries on this list – a definite must-see (read our review here).

Oklahoma City

People that were around during the 90s will remember the atrocious Oklahoma City bombing attack.

This documentary film thoroughly examines the events that led up to the worst case of domestic terrorism in American history, keeping you on your toes for the entire viewing experience.

Nobody Speak: Trials of the Free Press

Nobody Speak is about the trial of Hulk Hogan vs Gawker Media and the liberties of the free press (and the moral grey area surrounding said liberties).

This documentary makes for excellent debate fodder.

Did the press take things too far here, or were they completely within their rights?

Prescription Thugs

Prescription Thugs is a documentary about addiction and the abuse of prescription drugs, painkillers, in particular.

Painkillers are a blessing for some, but when abused, can become deadly.

This emotional documentary sees its director, Chris Bell, on a journey alongside family and friends as he learns about the toll that prescription drugs can take on the life of a person as well as the people around them, all while bringing to light some of the shady tactics employed by Big Pharma, who stand to profit from the abuse of their products.

Tony Robbins: I Am Not Your Guru

Is Tony Robbins a self-help guru?

It’s not exactly how he sees it, as acclaimed director Joe Berlinger takes viewers behind the scenes on one of Robbins’ most popular multi-day seminars, ‘Date with Destiny’.

The film gives us a good insight into the life of renowned motivator and business strategist, Anthony Robbins, and may have you debating whether or not you think the man’s methods are actually helpful, or potentially just a crock.

Despite what you think of him, the praise is generally unanimous and considering people pay him seven-figure sums to set their lives straight, he must be doing something right… Right?

Virunga

One of the first original Netflix documentaries, Virunga follows a group of brave individuals who risk their lives to protect the last of eastern Congo’s mountain gorillas.

A militia uprising threatens the lives of all involved as the filmmakers get deep into the dangerous situation at Virunga National Park.

This documentary is tense and will take you places you may have only ever seen before in the movies.

Gaga: Five Foot Two

People often believe that popstars have easy, lavish lives, jetting around the world, doing what they love and being spoonfed and clothed by numerous handlers.

Part of that is true, but the pressures that come with superstardom are no joke.

Gaga: Five Foot Two highlights the life of one of the world’s biggest popstars, Lady Gaga, as we join her in the music-making and touring process.

The film reveals just how much like the rest of us Gaga actually is (just a tad more diva-ish), as the pressures of the job begin to take their toll.

Team Foxcatcher

Team Foxcatcher tells the story of wrestler Dave Schultz and his time at the Team Foxcatcher wrestling camp in the leadup to the 1988 Olympics.

The disturbing part about this story lies with the team’s psychotic owner, John Du Pont.

If you’ve seen the 2014 film Foxcatcher with Steve Carell and Channing Tatum, then you know how this one ends.

Even if you have, though, be sure to check out this less dramatized retelling of events – it’s just as shocking.

Rocco

There’s always been a fair amount of taboo surrounding the professional porn scene, so already, this film may not be for everyone.

Rocco gives audiences an insight into the life and career of one of the industry’s biggest stars (see what I did there?), Rocco Siffredi.

The film takes us behind-the-scenes of the porn industry, introducing us to its characters as well as the highs and lows that come with the job, alongside an unflinching look at Siffredi’s personal life and motivations.

Have you seen any of these Netflix documentaries and if so, what did you think?

Maybe you have some to recommend?
