Natalie Portman Plays a Pop Diva in New Drama ‘Vox Lux’

Natalie Portman plays Celeste, a pop superstar with a tragic past in the upcoming musical drama film Vox Lux.

The trailer highlights the film’s dramatic elements and features Portman doing pop diva-ish things.

There is, however, a whole other aspect of this film that isn’t immediately obvious in the trailer.

For instance, it’s only outlined in the film’s official synopsis that the film starts out featuring a young Celeste, who along with her sister, are subject to a ‘seismic, violent tragedy’ as girls.

They write a song about their ordeal, which subsequently catapults Celeste into superstardom.

The film then follows Celeste as an adult with a teenage daughter of her own, as scandals and more violent acts rock the singer’s world.

It sounds like a rather heavy movie and you can see it in the tone presented in the trailer.

This isn’t one of those fluffy musical films, but what appears to be a grounded, raw dramatisation of a tragic story.

Vox Lux is directed by Brady Corbet, whose first film The Childhood of a Leader (2015) looked exceptionally dark.

Portman looks to be in top form here, coming off her excellent performance in Netflix’s awesome sci-fi/horror film Annihilation (2018).

The film also stars Jude Law and Christopher Abbott and hits cinemas on 7 December 2018.
