The hotly anticipated Mortal Kombat reboot and new adaptation of the popular video game gets a delightfully gory first trailer.
The film follows the story of MMA fighter Cole Young (Lewis Tan), who was born with a mysterious dragon birthmark on his body.
Young discovers, through a meeting with special forces soldier Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee), that the birthmark is his entry into a fighting tournament known as Mortal Kombat.
The tournament not only hosts fighters from Earth but also fierce, mystical warriors from Outworld, such as Shang Tsung (Chin Han), Sub-Zero (Joe Taslim), and Scorpion (Hiroyuki Sanada), who will compete in a battle to the death for the fate of the universe.
It’s been more than twenty-five years since 1995’s Mortal Kombat released to audiences worldwide and went on to become a fan-favourite, making a huge profit.
It was followed by a sequel in 1997 which was heavily criticised and failed to capture the same amount of adoration from fans.
Since then, fans have been wanting to see a third entry into the franchise, with producer and director James Wan finally answering the call and taking on-board the production of the new video game film reboot, with debut director Simon McQuoid at the helm.
The trailer for Mortal Kombat gives audiences a look at all the key players in the story, who alongside the above-listed characters includes Jax (Mehcad Brooks), Mileena (Sisi Stringer), Liu Kang (Ludi Lin), Kung Lao (Max Huang), Raiden (Tadanobu Asano), and Kano (Josh Lawson).
One of the more crowd-pleasing aspects of the film is that it has taken the video game’s notorious blood and gore and brought it to life in the film, with glimpses of some of the brutality shown in the trailer.
The story is one that’s ultimately a bit silly, but the production design on this film looks outstanding, so it should at least make for a super-cool visual experience.
Mortal Kombat arrives in cinemas and HBO Max on 16 April 2021.
