We’ve compiled a list of some of the featured films screening at MIFF, so please check them out below.
The Killing of a Sacred Deer
Director: Yorgos Lanthimos
Starring: Nicole Kidman, Colin Farrell, Alicia Silverstone
From Yorgos Lanthimos, the visionary director of Dogtooth (2009) and The Lobster (2015) comes his latest film The Killing of a Sacred Deer, about a teenager’s attempts to bring a brilliant surgeon into his dysfunctional family. Anyone that’s seen Lanthimos’ past work can surely expect more twisted storylines and unconventional filmmaking in this one.
Jungle
Director: Greg McLean
Starring: Daniel Radcliffe
From Greg McLean, the Australian director of the Wolf Creek films and this year’s violent The Belko Experiment comes Jungle, starring Daniel Radcliffe. The film follows Radlciffe’s character Yossi Ghinsberg, as he and his friends are forced to survive the terrors of a Bolivian jungle.
The Square
Director: Ruben Östlund
Starring: Claes Bang, Elisabeth Moss, Dominic West
This film won the 2017 Cannes Palme d’Or and is from the director of the fantastic, must-see 2014 film Force Majeure. If those two things don’t warrant checking this one out, then nothing will. The Square is a poignant satirical drama reflecting our times – about the sense of community, moral courage and the affluent person’s need for egocentricity in an increasingly uncertain world (IMDB synopsis).
Ali’s Wedding
Director: Jeffrey Walker
Starring: Osamah Sami, Don Hany, Helana Sawires
An Australian romantic-comedy film based on true events, Ali’s Wedding is a film about forbidden love in two highly religious families (check out the trailer here).
Top of the Lake: China Girl
Directors: Jane Campion, Ariel Kleiman
Starring: Elisabeth Moss, Nicole Kidman, Gwendoline Christie
Season 2 of the outstanding 2013 crime-drama mini-series Top of the Lake will be premiering at MIFF, in a marathon 3 x 2-hour screening of all 6 episodes. Elisabeth Moss returns to the series and she’s joined by Australia’s own Nicole Kidman and Game of Thrones standout Gwendoline Christie.
