The Backlot Rooftop Drive-in will be situated in the Dockland’s Harbourtown district near the observation wheel, and will launch on 26 December 2016.
The unique rooftop drive-in comes to us from Tony Ianiro and Mark D’Angelo, who are the founders of The Backlot Studios, Australia’s first private cinema and events space in Southbank, Melbourne.
The Backlot Studios owners had this to say about their upcoming project:
“We aren’t reinventing the wheel as Drive-ins have operated in Australia for decades. The objective of The Backlot Rooftop Drive-in was to manufacture a model for cinemagoers whereby such an offering could be introduced to major inner-cities with Melbourne Docklands being the first”.
The cinema will feature films from a variety of genres across two giant screens, at different sessions during the evening.
Each field will accommodate up to 65 vehicles and there is also an option for those wishing to catch a movie without a vehicle, with an intimate ‘blue-deck’ seating area with sound to be received via headphones provided by the venue.
This is a nice addition to Melbourne’s increasing list of attractions and will hopefully see more people visit the Docklands precinct, which has had a fairly rocky start since its inception.
Tickets can be purchased online via ‘Veezi’ or at the venue and for more updates, please visit:
