If you ever doubted Margot Robbie’s acting ability then be prepared to be proven wrong in what could be a career-defining performance from the Australian actress.
Robbie stars as real-life champion figure skater Tonya Harding in this film about her tumultuous life.
It’s based on a true story that focuses on the rise and fall of the athlete, her strained relationship with her over-bearing mother/coach and the pressures that come with fame.
These themes appear to be relatively common amongst the lives of superstar athletes, but just going by this new trailer, it looks as though there were same crazy times throughout the skater’s life and career.
Robbie appears to be in career-best form here, and her co-stars Allison Janney and Sebastian Stan also look like they’ve brought their A-games.
I, Tonya is directed by Craig Gillespie, whose past credits include the outstanding Lars and the Real Girl (2007), and the not so outstanding Fright Night (2011), so it will be interesting to see how this one pans out (however the early buzz has been very positive).
The film looks like it will contain a mix of drama, intrigue and comedy, which should please a wide audience on its own, and an even wider one when you consider Margot Robbie’s appeal.
It hits cinemas on 8 December 2017 in the USA.
