The classic ‘sword in the stone’ tale from the King Arthur mythology gets a modern update in Joe Cornish’s The Kid Who Would Be King.
Regular schoolkid Alex (Louis Ashbourne Serkis) discovers the legendary ‘sword in the stone’, Excalibur, and upon removing it from the stone, unleashes a mythical evil onto the world.
Alex and his school friends, along with the help of Merlin (Patrick Stewart), must use their abilities to stop the evil enchantress Morgana (Rebecca Ferguson) from wreaking havoc on the earth.
The Kid Who Would Be King takes the classic King Arthur story and sets it in the modern day, using children as the main protagonists.
It comes to us from director Joe Cornish, whose only other directing credit is the cult favourite film Attack the Block (2011), which put a then young John Boyega in Hollywood’s sights.
Despite minimal directing credits, Cornish also has written the screenplay for the popular Marvel film Ant-Man (2015) and Spielberg’s The Adventures of Tintin (2011).
This long-anticipated follow-up from the director looks like a bit of fun, heavily favouring a fantasy-adventure tone for kids and families.
The Arthur story is a universal one, so while the film is obviously aimed towards a younger audience, there should be something in this for everyone.
The Kid Who Would Be King is due out in cinemas on 15 February 2019.
