Jonah Hill’s ‘Mid90s’ Trailer is an Homage to Life in the… Mid 90’s

Hill’s Mid90s is a coming-of-age throwback to 90’s culture, going as far as being shot in the 4:3 aspect ratio, with a grainy, VHS-style look and feel.

Set in mid-90’s LA, the film follows thirteen-year-old Stevie (Sunny Suljic) as he navigates between his troubled home life and his group of skateboarding buddies.

Mid90’s style might come across as gimmicky to some, and they wouldn’t be wrong.

It’s a nice touch, though probably an unnecessary one.

Nevertheless, Hill has hit the mark in his intended vision for the film’s aesthetic, as it literally looks like the film was shot on a 90’s VHS compatible camera (for all we know it may have been).

Despite that, the film looks like a genuinely touching and funny dramedy, with family dynamics a big theme in the film.

Young actor Sunny Suljic plays the central character and he’s joined by rising star Lucas Hedges and Katherine Waterston.

Jonah Hill makes his directorial debut here, after having written and produced films like Why Him? (2016), Sausage Party (2016) and 21 Jump Street (2012) and its sequel.

Mid90s is being released by powerhouse film studio A24 films and is due for release on 19 October 2018.
