John David Washington finds himself caught in the middle of a political conspiracy in the international thriller film, Beckett.
Washington plays Beckett, an American tourist on vacation in Greece with his girlfriend, when their car veers off the road causing a devastating accident.
Police question him after his girlfriend (Alicia Vikander) goes missing, subsequently becoming the target of a manhunt.
Beckett must travel across the sweeping landscapes of Greece and get to the American Embassy in Athens and clear his name while police try to chase him down.
The film has all the vibe of a 90s chase/conspiracy thriller film; think The Fugitive (1993) crossed with Enemy of the State (1998), and it looks tense and full of twists and turns.
It’s the type of film that will keep audiences guessing until the very end, and while it will surely be full of cliche’s, there’s generally a lot of entertainment value in these kinds of films.
Setting the film in Greece is also a nice touch as it makes for some beautiful background scenery and adds an extra element of paranoia to the film’s tone, the protagonist being a stranger in a strange land.
John David Washington is coming off the back of some excellent performances in BlacKkKlansman (2018) and Chris Nolan’s divisive film Tenet (2020), and he looks like a great fit in the lead role here.
Beckett is directed by Ferdinando Cito Filomarino and will hit Netflix on 13 August 2021.
