An intriguing trailer for Kurt Knight’s The Appearance sets up a moody medieval setting, with plague doctors and monks amidst the chaos of the inquisition.
The story focuses on the mystery surrounding the horrific death of a monk, and the inquisitor Mateho (Jake Stormoen), sent by the church to investigate alleged witchcraft.
The film utilises a series of haunting scenes in castle dungeons, ghostly woodlands and other grim settings to suggest that Mateho is slowly drawn in and consumed by the lurking evil presence.
This film looks interesting, if for no other reason than in how far back in time the creators have chosen to delve, making it almost classically gothic.
A lot of the moody footage appears quite slow and the film may yet prove to suffer for this, but if it’s not dull, could this be the start of a wave of new gothic in cinema?
The Appearance is director Kurt Knight’s sophomore effort and stars Jake Stormoen, Adam Johnson, Michael Flynn, Baylee Self and cult TV star Kristian Nairn (Hodor from Game of Thrones).
