The new trailer for DC’s upcoming film Shazam! features the title character performing some heroic rescues while having fun doing so.
Zachary Levi and Asher Angel play Shazam and Billy Batson respectively in the upcoming DC superhero film.
Batson is a 15-year old regular teenager who is given superpowers by a magical wizard (played by Djimon Hounsou).
Upon saying the word ‘Shazam’, Batson transforms into a heroic, older version of himself with multiple superpowers (think Superman with the mind of a teenager).
The film is an origin story and introduction of a new character into the DC universe, with a tone that leans towards the side of the humorous.
It will see Batson/Shazam discover and come to terms with their new abilities while having to stop the film’s villain Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong), who, assumedly has some world-ending scheme.
I can’t imagine there will be much originality in the film’s plot, however, the humour that’s teased in the trailer along with some impressive visual effects could make up for any shortcomings in that department.
Shazam! just looks like a genuinely fun superhero film, which is a nice change of pace from some of the bleaker DC entries we’ve seen in the past.
The film will try to replicate the lighter tone set in DC’s recent entry Aquaman (2018), which went on to become their highest grossing superhero film to date (worldwide tally).
It’s directed by David F. Sandberg, whose first two films were the horrors Lights Out (2016) and Annabelle: Creation (2017).
