Frank Grillo is brutally killed over and over again in the new death loop action film Boss Level from director Joe Carnahan.
Grillo plays Roy Pulver, a former special forces soldier who’s trapped in a Groundhog Day-style time loop (or in this case a death loop), that sees him brutally murdered at the end of each day, only to wake up and have to relive the experience over and over again.
The man that’s put him there is Col. Clive Ventor (Mel Gibson), but for reasons unknown (not yet revealed in the trailer).
Roy must fight his way through an assortment of ultra-violent assassins as he tries to find a way out of the death loop.
The film comes to us from Joe Carnahan, who’s had plenty of experience directing action films such as Smokin’ Aces (2006), The A-Team (2010), and the awesome Liam Neeson survival action-thriller, The Grey (2011).
Boss Level looks like a bit of silly fun and one that doesn’t take itself seriously, relying on its violence to draw a crowd.
While this film won’t break any new ground, its managed to attract an outstanding cast that alongside Frank Grillo and Mel Gibson includes Naomi Watts, Michelle Yeoh, Annabelle Wallis, and Ken Jeong.
There’s also been a recent insurgence of death loop films that include Happy Death Day (2017), Happy Death Day 2U (2019), Palm Springs (2020), and even Chris Nolan’s Tenet (2020) to a degree, so it seems as though Carnahan might be trying to capitalise on that trend.
Boss Level is due for release in the USA on 5 March 2021.
