Over the past few weeks, I have frequented the movies enough to have seen the trailer for Ready Player One more times than I’d like to count.
What have I discovered from this trend?
That I won’t like it.
Maybe I’ve grown beyond that fantasy realm or maybe my dislike stems from the fact that I was never into video games, but I can already tell from this final trailer that it is simply not my style.
Director Steven Spielberg follows main character Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) as he explores his life on earth and the world of OASIS.
OASIS is a virtual reality created by James Halliday (Mark Rylance), that allows humans to escape from their own realities and transcend into another one entirely.
Upon his death, Halliday plants an Easter egg in the game and tells the populace that whoever finds it will inherit control of OASIS as well as Halliday’s own fortune.
As you can imagine, much fighting ensues with the good guys trying to complete their quest and the bad guys raising hell to prevent them from doing so.
The transitions between the real world and the virtual one feel strange and uncomfortable, what with the humanness of the real world being at complete odds to the video game animation that replaces it in OASIS.
Ready Player One is made up of a little bit of love, a whole lot of war and a wacky idea that might not actually be too far off what we can expect for our future.
Rather than waste a couple hours on this film, I think I’ll go outside and enjoy the fresh air and freedom of the 21st century while it still exists.
