The trailer for the upcoming sequel to Fifty Shades of Grey has beaten The Force Awakens in total trailer views after the first 24 hours.
Fifty Shades Darker has become the most viewed trailer in the first 24 hours of release, with 114 million views across all digital platforms.
It’s a bit shocking to hear that it beat The Force Awakens, considering the anticipation that film had behind it and the franchise’s place in pop-culture history.
I haven’t seen Fifty Shades of Grey so can’t comment on what the fuss is all about, but that film currently holds a 25% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and still managed to earn $571 million USD at the global box office, so there’s obviously a huge market for it.
The sequel, which is due out in cinemas on 10 February 2017 in the USA is directed by James Foley, who directed 1992’s outstanding film Glengarry Glen Ross, and more recently was a director of 12 episodes of the smash-hit Netflix series House of Cards.
Maybe this director can turn out a product that will appeal to both fans and critics with this sequel, but even if he doesn’t, the film is sure to make a tonne of money at the box office when it releases.
Fifty Shades Darker sees Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan reprising their roles and they’re joined by Tyler Hoechlin, Kim Basinger and Bella Heathcote.
